Spookvoertuigen – What Does It Mean and What Happens During a Stop by Dutch Police?
A ,,Spookvoertuig” refers to a vehicle registered in the system as non-existent, deregistered, or with an unresolved legal status. This can result from administrative errors, unpaid fees, missing documents, or the vehicle being reported stolen. Such vehicles automatically raise suspicions during road checks, often leading to a police stop.
- Road Check: Police stop the vehicle to verify the driver’s and car’s documents. During this procedure, they may discover that the car is flagged in the system.
- Status Verification: Officers cross-check the vehicle’s details in the central RDW registration system. If the car fails to meet legal requirements, it may be towed to a police impound lot.
- Issues for the Driver: The owner or driver is informed of the discrepancies, often resulting in the need to address formalities, pay fines, or resolve the vehicle’s status.
